East bale.

Greetings, dear readers! Well, it’s true, I’ve let the blog lag. Not for the loss of love of sharing our story, but simply for a redirection of energy. We have been in the finalizing stages (of this phase) of things these last months. As always, everything takes more time than you think it will.

Our crews have all moved on. Our construction is finished (for now!). With the exception of one contractor working on our personal closets, (Yay! Can you say organization?) we are down to our regular staff of housekeeping and gardeners.

The rains are upon us, but we are in our “pequeno verano” (little summer) where we have a few weeks reprieve. It’s a lovely time to be here. The gardens and landscape are lush and green, the sky is blue and filled with billowy clouds. The air is fresh and sweetly fragrant. Mother Earth is sharing her abundance of beauty, tickling our senses.

Our energies these days are going into the detail work now. Decorating, potting plants, etc. The rain has taken care of our efforts at gardening and by the end of this season, things will look like we’ve been here for years. Yes, it’s THAT fertile here. Greg, in his “Operations Manager” role, is whipping the place into shape, finalizing the foot-paths and removing all the left-over construction debris (happy about THAT!). We have retreats booked for next season and have been connecting with some wonderful people! (Happy about that, too!)

All in all, we’ve come a LONG way since our first blog post on May 8, 2010! It’s been (and continues to be) quite a ride! One day, I will go back and read all these posts from the beginning – but, for now I think I’ll wait a while – I’m enjoying this present time.  And that being said, I am off now to pick up our fresh milk in town… fresh raw, milk yogurt!!! YUM!

Enjoy the slide show!

Under the Costa Rican moon.

Woosh… Time warp. We’ve been living in the new space since Thanksgiving day, 2011. Settling in more and more. We’ve enjoyed cooking for friends, sharing the pool, decorating… all the things you do at “home” and even with all the crazy, frenetic, non-stop activity – sawing, banging, concrete mixers, sanders – power tool city –  we manage to find the moments to embrace the present. The nice thing we can always count on is 5:00pm. No matter what – everything stops and the crew retreats to their “bodega” and the space is ours and quiet again. Swimming in our new pool, under the Costa Rican moon and stars is (one of) my favorite times of day. Here is where everything melts away, dissolving into the water that has been sun-warmed all day. Surrounded by the silhouette of the mountains, canopied by the starry sky, under the umbrella of the trees, I float in the weightlessness gazing up at the celestial ceiling, feeling cradled in the arms of the Great Mother, under the watchful eye of Father Sky. THIS is home… and we can’t wait to share it all with YOU!!

Blowin' in the wind...

Wow, I can’t believe our last post was October 25! Yes, the rains came and went and now the north winds are blowing. Costa Rica weather has many, many faces. I think of B.K.S. Iyengar and his power-house breath-work when I hear the wind swirling outside. Sometimes a big gust will come along and then there is a moment of calm, like a long exhale and then the momentary pause before the next in-breath. There is such immense energy and power in the wind and it reminds me of my own breath and the life force it brings. I’m feeling these winds are bringing the energy of movement, a sense of “pushing through” things now. Our AHKí is in the birth canal and we are laboring to bring her into the world. (Two months, and counting!). B R E A T H E…

Speaking of birthing (again), yesterday on the way home, we passed a cow who had JUST given birth to her calf. The BRAND new baby, layed curled up right along the side of the road. Of course we had to stop (one kicks themselves at these moments for not ALWAYS carrying a camera) to have a look at this brand new life. Absolute perfection, wide eyed, not totally in it’s new world yet – with mom, anxious about our peering eyes, still not sure what to do with this new creature that she knows is somehow her own. With respect, we didn’t linger as to give her the space she needed to figure it all out. It was one of those rare and lovely moments that gives you that true “warm and fuzzy” feeling right to the core of your heart.

And The Rains Came…

October 25, 2011

Top floor action resumes on secundo cabina.

… and continue coming. October in Costa Rica – the rainiest of all months. And, lucky us La Niña has chosen to visit us this year rather than her more fierce, male counterpart, El Niño, who was here in 2010. The rains are down 38% from last year and let me tell you, we’re getting a lot of rain. It’s been raining non-stop now for over 4 hours with no sign of letting up. Pura Vida! right?

That being said, you can probably imagine that things have slowed here a bit – still progressing, but more slowly. The second floor of the second cabina is up with roof and exterior siding halfway done. The view from that deck is spectacular. I imagine enjoying an evening or two of stargazing from that spot. We can’t wait to try sleeping in all the rooms! The windows are in, but the silicone didn’t stick because – you guessed it – the wood was wet, so they’re redoing a few. The floor guys did a terrible job on our bedroom floor, so they’re redoing that and paying much more careful attention to how the complete the rest of the house. We’re “told” they’ll be finished with the bedroom/dining room/kitchen portion of the house by the 27th (weather pending, of course). Then we can install the doors, hook up the plumbing, gas, appliances, sinks and toilets. We’re so close to moving in we can taste it, but we still need to complete a few other details like closets. The lighting is just about complete.

The pool is a big project and can really be delayed by the rain, however, there IS progress there. Carlos, our landscaper, has journeyed North for another job and will be gone for several weeks. He has left behind the orders for the crew, but here, again, the rains thwart their efforts. In this case, however, the rain is good as many of the plants planted are babies and need a lot of rain to get rooted. The irrigation system instillation is underway, too, as to not loose all the precious work done thus far in the dry season!

AHKi is beginning to generate some interest and has booked a few retreats. We hope, if you already haven’t, check out our website. And if you hear of anyone looking for a place to take their workshop or group – we hope you will pass the word about AHKí!!

How does one describe “sensation”? How does one write a blog when one feels “at a loss for words?” A predicament for sure, but I’ll try.

First, I can’t believe it’s September! (Happy Labor Day everyone!) We are two short months shy of being here a whole year! How did THAT happen? A time warp no doubt. This “experience” continues with it’s onslaught of sensation layered upon sensation, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Standing in the midst of it all as it whirls around us like a tasmanian devil, it seems a force not our own is driving the rise of this “something” from “seemingly nothing”… the “birth” of this dream. But, when I look closely it becomes clear how this “seemingly nothing” is not random and truth simply means just being able to accept what is and recognize the gifts within it.

Early last year I started to notice how “help” began showing up in many forms – people, finances, information – that we needed in the moment. This has not stopped. Every step of the way, miracles continue to feed this process pushing us ever closer to completion. BUT, I know there really IS no completion, the “work” will not stop, it will just change. We have much “giving back” to do. There is no “there”, only the journey – something I have known about, experienced, talked about, but nothing in my life has taught me more about what “living in the now” truly means – and the liberation that can bring.

I hope someday to share, more in depth, my feelings on this subject, but right now I’m sure you are all wanting to look at the pictures! So without further delay, enjoy the show…

Carlos's list of garden equipment for us to buy.

I am pleased (and relieved) to announce that we have contracted a master landscape architect who is helping us whip our gardens into shape! Cleaning and clearing has begun as we are creating a clear pallet for hard and soft-scape to be implemented. Tomorrow Carlos, Shaman and Artist, will present his “master plan”. He totally gets the essence of AHKI and no doubt will be providing us much beauty and knowledge, keeping us in time with the rhythm of mother earth.

In the meantime, the crew is making good progress. The cabinet maker will be starting the kitchen cabinets next week. Windows will begin installation. Pool prices will be coming in.

AND… I am very happy to report we are booking retreats! We have three in March and one possibility for April. All before even launching our official website. I do hope any of you that are out there who are interested in bringing a group here, will contact us soon. We are very much looking forward to sharing this amazing space. A visiting facilitator yesterday who was scoping our site for her future retreat said that she: loved the large kitchen space and the house overall; commented repeatedly on the views and how the property offered so many different vistas all around; was pleased with the large and spacious guestrooms and she loved the showers! She commented the space felt really good, really nice energy here and she loved the remoteness and stillness, and yet how easy it was to get to and how close we are to town and beaches.

We couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful response. My heart is full, because if someone can feel that way at this half-way point, we know we are on the right track. We are feeling very blessed!

Enjoy the latest pics!

Not a whole lot to report except that things are really moving along. I’m going to let the pictures speak.

Enjoy! (Don’t forget to click on the photos to see the enlargements!)

ahki IS BORN

June 30, 2011

A big day today for us… we finally have announced our “official” name.

We’ve gone from a couple of crazy kids (ok, kids at heart) who sold all and came to Costa Rica to build a new life and retreat space  – to – a real business with it’s own identity. Yes, we still have plenty of “finishing” work to do and have “miles to go before we sleep”. But, ahki is HERE, readying herself to receive your special retreats and workshops.

We hope you will watch our “presentation” video. There you will find more insight and info on ahki – the name at YouTube OR simply click the latest video icon “THE NAMING”  in the sidebar on the main page.

Thanks everyone, for your support!

Big event happening tomorrow on Facebook, everyone!! We are posting the our name for the first time, finally revealing our “identity”, or rather the identity of this creation that has been weaving it’s own way into the fabric of existence. Things are shifting now, and we’re moving from a place of ideas and conception to a place of tangible new life. This birthing process is still underway, but we are “crowning” as the say in the delivery room.

We hope you will pull up a chair and log on tomorrow, Thursday, June 30, at 4:00p (Central Standard Time) to be there with us for this important moment. However – if  that is not possible for you, no worries – future blog posts have it covered!

You can find the event link at our Sanctuary for the Soul page, or go directly to the event page:
